What Do I Eat?

This is probably the most commonly asked question people ask when they are trying to lose weight, get in shape, have stalled in their progress, or are having issues with their health.  So that means it is relevant to almost everyone.  We live in a culture that celebrates everything with food, but not the healthiest food.  We also live in one of the richest countries in the world so you would think that we eat the best healthiest foods, but we don’t.  Also, many of the poor health issues that plague so many people, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and more can be cured or helped tremendously by changing their diet.
The CDC reported in September of 2015 that a whopping 35.1% of Americans 20 years or older are obese!  They also report that a tragic 69% of Americans 20 years or older are overweight (including obese).  This is out of control!  It is more common, to look different than everyone else if you are thin and in shape when you go out in public than if you are overweight.  That is completely the opposite of how it was only 30 years ago.  If you eat a healthy diet and exercise, you are in the minority.  You are weird, a health nut, and often made fun of.
Through the great inventions of the 20th century, we are now the laziest society on Earth.  We have so many wonderful conveniences at our finger tips, that most Americans literally sit the majority of their waking hours.  Combine a life of lethargy and overeating a unhealthy diet of processed foods and too much sugar, and we are a population of people headed for medical disaster.
If you are like me, you want more than anything to NOT be in those statistics.  You also want your spouse, loved ones, kids, friends and family to be healthy.  It is all so unnecessary.  It is all so fixable.  We are all giving away our precious health because of laziness and a constant desire to eat what taste good to our lying tongues that deceive us.
So what should I eat?  How can I lose weight?  I want to have abs!  I want that beach body!  I want to fit in those jeans!  I want to get off medications!  Yes you can have all of those things, by following some simple programs.  You are capable.  You do hard things all the time in your busy lives.  You are smart, educated, and if you put your mind to it, you can learn to eat a healthy diet that will make all of that happen.  No more wishing.  No more unhappy shopping trips.  No more low self esteem because of carrying some extra weight.
There are several options.  The first one I suggest is the Paleo Diet.  It is very simple and easy to follow.  It is a diet of healthy meats/fish, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and healthy fats.  When you eat a paleo diet you take out all processed foods and sugar out of your diet.  This reaps an amazing amount of healthy benefits that are felt within the first week.  It is also one of the most effective forms of weightloss that I have witnessed.  The Paleo diet combined with CrossFit yields so many success stories that if you google it, you won’t run out of stories to read.  I suggest going 1 month strict Paleo.  Yes it’s hard at first, but quickly you will have the hang of it and seeing the fat fall off.  After the first month, you can gauge you progress and decide if you can add some things back in or continue strict Paleo and keep feeding your body great food.

There are other great programs to follow that also yield health and weightloss.  The Zone diet is very successful.  It is recommended by many people in CrossFit.  You eat many of the same type foods that you eat on Paleo, but you can eat a larger variety.  The only difficult part is that you have to learn to eat the correct proportions and eat more meals per day.  You can read about how to follow the Zone Diet here
Lastly, the most recent diet plan to follow that is having much success is the Renaissance Periodization Diet.  This is a much more in depth involved program that you work with a nutritionist to follow a designed menu that is specific to you.  We have several people at CrossFit Passion who have followed this program and have had incredible results.  I haven’t tried it myself, but based on their results I am tempted to try.  The only negative to this program is it is expensive since you are utilizing the services of a nutritionist.  However, when you are working on reaching a healthy weight, getting off medications, or even just being happy with your body, I think the money is worth it.  Learn about the Renaissance Periodization Program here
The biggest thing I can say to you is that it is worth it to be the weirdo, the health nut, and being made fun of for eating well.  You will be happy with yourself, feel better than you have felt in years, love your body in clothes and without clothes, have your health, and be a good role model for the people in your life.  If you have any questions or need help, ask any of the coaches at CrossFit Passion and we will do our best to help you out.
